Cy Rawls

Cy Rawls is a native Virginian but has lived in Louisiana most of the last forty years. She began studying art in High School under Jeanne Roberts and later under Teresa Pollack, Maurice Bonds and Charles Sibley. This was in the heyday of the abstract expressionist movement carried on by Jackson Pollack, de Kooning, Mark Rothko and others. Ms. Rawls says of her student years “While we were not discouraged from representational painting, we were discouraged from using any outside influence in our art–our paintings and drawings were to be completely freestyle and original, true expressions of our deepest–often subconscious–feelings. We drew and painted entirely from memory and emotion. What many artists would see as severe restrictions suited me just fine.”

For many years Ms. Rawls worked as a graphic artist–as a contract artist at a plant,  sole proprietor of Industrial Graphics and a stint doing computer graphics for the federal government. It is only in the last five years that she has returned to fine art and the pleasure of being as creative as she likes.

When asked about her current artistic efforts, Ms. Rawls says she feels “no great compulsion to be painting or drawing constantly. The mood must strike me. But when I begin I am completely engrossed until the piece is finished.”

She particular enjoys encouraging her two granddaughters to draw and paint. Also, she has begun matting and framing her own work and admits that rather than a chore she finds framing very satisfying.

When asked what she would like to accomplish in the art field she replied “I have always wanted to do really large paintings. Once I bought a 4-foot by 4-foot canvas–a real no-no in the world of painting. I carted it around for several moves than finally threw it out! I have gotten hold of some quite large paper and am trying to drum up the courage to start working on it.”
