May Artist of The
Month at RRAA
Dominica Ramirez
was chosen Artist of the Month for May at
River Region Art
Gallery. She is a self-taught artist from Baton Rouge who enjoys
using bright colors and a good amount of humor in her artwork. Much
of her artwork portrays a Spanish influence.
Dominica mostly
makes Day of the Dead shrine boxes, but also enjoys painting other
objects from wooden jewelry boxes to switch plates. Her shrine
boxes are created to celebrate people, places and ideas. She
encourages people to place requests in order to make the art an
interactive process.
Dominica
has lived in California, New York and Virginia, and has traveled
extensively. She always stresses the importance of travel, whether
ten miles down the road or ten hours across the Atlantic. A graduate
from Louisiana State University, she holds a B.A. and an M.A. in
Anthropology, a discipline that allowed her to explore the history
and culture of the state of Louisiana, a constant source of
inspiration.
Presently
Dominica
is serving as newsletter editor for River Region Art Association.
Her colorful exhibit are on display at River Region Art Gallery. The Gallery is open Tuesday-Sunday from
10-5 for public viewing.
