Kathleen "Kitty" Church Kuhnert, now living in Gonzales, has been an avid photographer since her first Brownie camera was received when she was 9 years of age. She is a long time member of the Louisiana Photographic Society. In this time she has been awarded Black and White Photographer of the Year, twice Slide Photographer of the Year, once overall club Photographer of the Year and contributed to a column in a periodical relating to photography for several years.
She is a member of the River Region Art Association, and the New Orleans Photo Alliance. She has gone through the usual procession of cameras over the years, and once had all of her photo equipment stolen from the car in a hotel parking lot in Houston causing near hysteria. This required that she start all over again with more modern camera equipment, and eventually made the painful transition from film and slides to digital. She does not use the Photoshop programs on her work preferring to present it exactly as shot. Presently she carrys with her at all times at least one digital and one film camera. She prefers to shoot film for her black and white work, but it is becoming increasing difficult to find good local developers.
Kitty is retired from a 31 year business career, and now able to travel with her husband for his business. All he has to do is say "I've got to go...", and she and her cameras are ready to go in the suitcase She is a three time cancer survivor, and finds beauty all around her....be it in Washington, D.C. or her own back yard. Wildlife is one of her passions as well as flowers, architectural pieces and landscapes. Recently she has begun to experiment in abstract photos, and is finding it very interesting.
She hangs her work in the River Region Art Center, the RRAA Satellite Gallery at Houmas House Gift Shop, and the Community Coffee House. For the month of February she had her photographs at the French Settlement Library relating to Mardi Gras and Valentine's Day. She took part in the White Nights celebration in Mid-City as well as hanging in several restaurants. She submits some of her work to the Gulf States Camera Club Council, and always tries to attend their annual conferences to learn more about new equipment and techniques. In additio she competes in many national and local photographic competitions, and annually contributes one of her photos to a Cancer Cure event in New York City as well sharing her photos at the Survivors' Celebration held annually in Baton Rouge by Cancer Services Watch for Kitty leaning from her car window taking shots or pulled over on the side of the road ready to snap that beautiful wildflower.
