Loreta Godwin

Loreta Godwin has been chosen as Artist of the Month for October at River Region Art Association.  Loreta’s education and appreciation for art began while growing up in the mountains of Virginia surrounded by writers, artists and musicians.  Her parents took her to the Smithsonian National Art Gallery before she turned ten years old.

She was given children’s art classes in painting and various crafts.  Loreta  painted, created handmade cards for family and friends, played with any type of art or craft that she could get her hands on or dream up.  She doodled and cartooned through many junior and high school classes.  She concentrated on playing the flute during high school and started as a music major at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge while taking art electives in drawing, watercolor and oil painting.  Graduating with a BS in education, Loreta taught elementary school and started a family.  She continued to utilize her many talents for friends and family painting fantasy wall murals.  Upon returning to school, she became a registered nurse, raised two children and worked many years as a nurse,

Loreta finally had the opportunity to pursue her art “full time”.  Her primary interest is in oil painting.  She chooses subjects that inspire her.  Color and contrast are emphasized in most of Loreta’s work.  She enjoys utilizing her imagination as demonstrated in her moonlight carousel fantasy painting of her granddaughter.  Other paintings include flowers, fish and recently completed firedog.   In 2009 Loreta created a series of whimsical Louisiana Christmas cards.   “Painting offers me the challenge to create what I see in my mind,” exclaims Loreta,” and my work continues to be for my own passion and pleasure.”

Loreta will have a display of her work at the River Region Art Gallery at Houmas House open daily from 10am-5pm and at the RRAA Art Center in Gonzales on Thursday and Saturday from 10am-4pm.  She will also exhibit her work in a booth at the Awesome Art in Autumn Gardens Arts & Cultural Festival on Oct 9 & 10 at Houmas House Plantation.
