Mamie Blanchard Braud
The bayou and Cajun scenes she loves to paint of
Cajun houses, plantation homes, magnolias, shrimpboats, irises,
waterlilies, sugarmills among a few are not new to this native who was
born and reared on Bayou Lafourche in Labadieville, Louisiana in
Assumption Parish.
When her husband's job brought them to Brewton, Alabama and the
last of their four sons had left for college, she enrolled at Jefferson
Davis Jr. College where she studied art under instructor John Spicer and
pottery with Larry Manning. When she and "Bubba" returned to Thibodaux,
she studied with John Meyer and Dottie Billiu at Studio One in Gray,
Louisiana. After a while she acquired a distinct technique of her own
that has rewarded her with numerous ribbons and awards. She has worked
with all mediums but prefers acrylics.
"Picture-taking" is also one of her many hobbies and she has a
great collection of photos. Her computer is her best ally and she has
used both in conjunction with her artwork.
Her pleasure in painting and encouraging others to do so has
brought her a lot of satisfaction. She is often seen at the local Art
shows where she exhibits and sells her works. She also has done many
commissioned works. Her paintings hang in many family and friends' homes
and offices locally and throughout the country. Mamie was named "Artist
of the Month" on several occasions at Terrebonne Fine Art Guild in
Houma, Louisiana. Also had a special show at the Assumption Cultural Art
Guild in Napoleonville, Louisiana.
Her husband and family are her best critics and give her a great
deal of support. When she and "Bubba" are not traveling and visiting
their children and grandchildren in Austin, Houston, Baton Rouge, and
Slidell, she is busy working and painting at home.
