Sandy Leader I was born and raised in Fernandina Beach, Florida. It is small island (Amelia), off the N. E. coast of Florida. I moved to Louisiana in 1963 and then moved to Dutchtown in 1973, raising my children there. I married my husband, David Leader, in 2003, and between us we have 4 children, 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. David is so supportive of anything that I do and encourages me. I retired from Leblanc’s Food Store in 2010, after working there for 17 years, many of those years as a bakery/deli manager. I am enjoying my retirement, because I have more time for my arts and crafts, grandchildren and the yard. We have citrus trees, flowers, a garden, berries, figs and gourds. We have a pecan tree that the squirrels really enjoy. We always seem to have a remodeling project going on at our house, since we bought an older home. We are members of Dreams Come True, an organization that grants dreams to children with life threatening illnesses and also team members of RCIA at St. John Catholic Church. I used to draw cartoons when I was in high school, and have sewn and baked cookies at an early age. As the kids were growing up, I learned macramé, ceramics, knitting and decorating cakes. I learned to cook here, all the good Cajun dishes; that I had never even heard of before. I have always had a camera and enjoy taking pictures of my family (great-grandchildren lately) and nature, especially sunrises on the beach and sunsets on the river. When we travel, I always come home with lots of pictures. I have always loved to work with my hands and am always learning more. I started painting seashells, that we pick up on the beach back home, about 7 years ago. I painted a tiger gourd about 5 years ago and I was hooked. My husband and I built a workshop, at our house, so I would have space to be creative. I like to cut out and paint Christmas ornaments, and other wooden crafts. I like to paint on driftwood and gourds. I usually work with acrylics. I just love to paint and work with wood. I am not an artist; I guess you could say that I am a “Jill of all trades”. My goal is to make people “smile” when they pick up something that I have made. That is the reward for me.
