Shirley Sheets Russell

Shirley Sheets Russell is a native of Gonzales, Louisiana.  She has both Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees in elementary education and is a certified LSU Writing Project teacher-consultant for Ascension Parish.  She taught sixth grade Language Arts at Gonzales Middle School until she retired recently.  In the past, she used her creativity mainly in the classroom creating artistic bulletin boards; designing hands-on activities to engage students in learning; and writing poetry.  Now that she is retired, her painting efforts have increased, and as a new member of the River Region Art Association, she enjoys the new friends she’s made.

Shirley visits museums, attends plays, reads a lot, likes gardening, takes photographs, feeds the backyard birds, plays with her two cats and now is wholeheartedly reconnected with watercolors and oils.  She has one married daughter who currently resides in Nevada with her husband and new baby.

She is self-taught in watercolor and oils, although she has taken one drawing class at LSU many years ago and one watercolor class recently with Louise Hansen.  Her favorite painting theme is nature that includes landscapes, birds, flowers, and small animals.  Shirley believes that art gives expression to each person’s creativity and is delighted to have the time to devote to her new passion since she retired.
