Shirley Sheets Russell
Shirley Sheets Russell is a native of Gonzales, Louisiana and has a BS and MA degrees in elementary education. She is a certified LSU Writing Project teacher for Ascension Parish and has published several prose poems in the LSU Writing Project magazine. She taught sixth grade language arts at Gonzales Middle School and incorporated the students’ creativity skills with writing until she retired. She has one married daughter who currently resides in Nevada with her husband and small daughter. Shirley writes the River Region Art Association newsletter, volunteers through her Church and supports its apostolates, visits museums, attends plays, reads a lot, likes container gardening, takes photographs, feeds the backyard birds, plays with her two cats, and now is wholeheartedly involved with oils and watercolors. She has taken oil painting with Elayne Kuehler and Johannes Vloothuis; watercolor classes with Judi Betts, Louise Hansen, and Roberta Loflin; pen-and-ink drawing with Louise Hansen; and photography with Helen Haw and Donna Smith. Painting for Shirley is nourishing and serene. Her art serves to center her with the tranquility and beauty that surrounds everyone in daily life. She believes that art gives expression to each person’s creativity and is delighted to have time to devote to her passion. Her favorite painting themes are still-lifes and landscapes.
